Lawn Drainage
Fixing lawn drainage issues can be a simple or complex process depending on the issue. Below are some of the most common problems we see:
There is standing water in my lawn for days after a rain.
Standing water is often caused by a poorly sloped lawn, poor percolation, or a high water table. To solve the slope issue the lawn must be regraded. A high water table or poor percolation can be solved with a french drain system.
There are puddles everywhere after it rains.
This is generally due to a poorly graded lawn. Regrading and smoothing the lawn is usually the best option here. If there are large puddles or areas holding water, an area drain or french drain may be a good solution.
My lawn is flat and water does not run off.
Sometimes when the lot was developed it wasn’t properly graded. Grading may be an option in these areas or an underground french drain grid may be used. Be sure water is not being pushed onto your foundation!
Areas of my lawn stay soft and muddy.
This is generally due to a high water table. A french drain is the best solution.
There is water coming through my walls.
If the water level outside your house is causing water to seep through the walls there are two items that should be checked. First the grade of the ground should slope away from your house for at least 6 feet. Secondly You may need a foundation drain to collect surface and ground water before it has a chance to enter your home.
My crawlspace has standing water.
The best option here is usually to install a foundation drain. If the slope does not allow gravity to pull the water away you may need a sump pump as well.
My yard is steep and rainwater is causing erosion.
There are a few options here. if the sloped area is not often used you can place large rock on the surface to break up the flow of water. If you want the area to be usable lawn space you can grade it to direct water into catch basins and run the water underground or you may build a retaining wall to level the surface out.
I have a french drain but it isn’t helping much.
Often french drains are constructed in such a way that they do not effectively lower the water table. This may be because the drain isn’t properly graded, the drain is clogged, or the wrong materials were used. The best way to solve these issues is to remove the poorly constructed drain and install a correctly engineered french drain system.
